Opinion: An award winning and stylish hotel. Rated 'one of the It is owned by the Montpellier Group who also owns Indigo Yard and Ricks nearby. The hotel is large and the rooms are fab oozing the 07' design with a profusion of metal and pale wood and glass. A bit pricey but the best fashionable lodging in town.

The Scotsman

Opinion: The landmark building of 'The Scotsman' newspaper group is now converted into an uber-chic and deluxe boutique hotel. Meticulous restoration with the period elements maintained intact. Modern facilities: flat-screen TV, internet, privacy locker available in all rooms. Nice art, good dining. Vermillion restaurant for a good grub. North Bridge - the bar and brasserie. Lay-out is labyrinthine with a profusion of stairs and fire-doors. Good leisure facilities: low-lit steel pool.

The Howard

Opinion: 3 recently refurbished townhouses stringed to form this splendid hotel. Offers discreet luxury and intimate ambiance. Owned by the same people as the Bonham (below)and Channings. Decor meshes well with the overall quite elegance. 24 hour room service. Atholl restaurant - popular with hotel guests and outsiders. Nightcaps served in the drawing room.Much emphasis on service. Spacious rooms and a restful drawing room. No bar or leisure facilities.

The Bonham

Opinion: Contemporary townhouse in a quiet area. Upbeat and relaxing: no-nonsense place. Favourite stop-over for visiting celebs and writers at the Book Festival. 2nd floor and above offers panoramic views. Rooms are individual and stylish with appealing bold color schemes and rich texture. Elegant dining at the spacious restaurant with a great menu: with a distinct French flavor. Great wine list. No bar.

The Malmaison

Opinion: An ultra-cool designer hotel with lavish settings and a homely feel. Perched on the banks of the Forth in Leith, the hotel offers great facilities. Some rooms on the higher floors have views of the harbour. The brasserie, well stocked cellar and bar ooze style and warmth.

The Point

Opinion: The hotel which found its place as one of the world's greatest designer hotels and graced the cover of 'Hotel Design' was once, hard to believe, a co-op department store. Good use of space and colors to create a rich yet not overly done ambiance. Restaurant and cafe are contemporary and spacious oozing a mid-Euro feel. Suites come with Jacuzzis. A conference centre.

Meticulous attention to details on everything.

Opinion: Urban dwelling resembling the likes of a high-end upmarket travel lodge or motel. Winner of several accolades. Main puller is the roof-garden lawn. Behind the facade of 150 year old church hides the ultra-cool, modern hotel. A novel and interesting concept in all.

Opinion: A number of Georgian townhouses clubbed into an apartment hotel by the Townhouse Group, which also owns the Bonham and Howard. A townhouse affair but on an altogether higher plane of extravagance. 24 hour room service; breakfast is on the offer but no full-fledged restaurant available. Some rooms have views of Dean village; and the Townhouse suites have 2 spacious bathrooms.

Opinion: Mirroring the soul of urban New York persona, this place is a new addition to the boutique portfolio of Edinburgh. The decor is - all urban and sleek. The street level cafe is good, a bit dark and done in tune with the overall decor elements. The style and decor is uniform throughout - progressive.

Opinion: Right in the middle of the fun and action centre of Edinburgh. One of the upbeat and contemporary 4 star hotels from the Apex group. This hotel came 2nd in the 'Green Tourism' activity in 2007. Decent dining options: Agua- the seafood specialty restaurant complete with a Crustacea bar and private dining. Hotel has a strict no smoking policy in all rooms. Leisure facilities are ok.

Opinion: Another one of the Apex brand hotels in the Grassmarket area. Modern and convenient. Dining options: The Heights -winner of two AA rosettes, Metro Bar and Brasserie, and private dining. The 6th floor restaurant - Heights, gives good views of the castle. Some rooms also offer views of the castle.

Opinion: Top class apartment hotel, ideally located opposite National Portrait Gallery. Well appointed apartments with coffee shop on the ground floor and private garden access. Good for both business and fun. Two penthouse apartments ideal for families and romantic couples. Convenient location: right in the middle of everything. Great views from the top floor.

Opinion: Ultra-modern and utilitarian. The decor is uniform and clean and mood quiet sophistication: a combination of traditional Georgian terrace with modern sympathetic development. The rooms are comfortable and come with the basic functions minus the hi-end frills. Superior in taste and design. Cafe-bar. Good for leisure and business travelers.

Opinion: Oozing contemporary feel the 36 rooms here are reasonably priced. A collection of university halls usually allotted to the students at Edinburgh University. Student-hall type accommodation is available only in vacation time which are ideal for budget travelers. Other rooms are available all year round.

Opinion: Contemporary feel - quite modern and urban. Run by the same people as Indigo yard and Opal Lounge. The bar is popular and full-on late in the night. Restaurant is in the same decor. Upstairs rooms are peaceful. Better not to go for the rooms directly above the bar. Same rate single or twin.

Opinion: Urban and hip. Done by the famous designer Ben Kelly (of the legendary Hacienda), though a bit cold on the decor. Rooms are a wee bit petite and furnishings just ok. But still a good hotel to stay in. Restaurant LO 9pm, bar 1am (DJs on Fri)

Opinion: Tucked away from the din yet centrally located. Townhouse style decor with a bit of funky touch. Restaurant for breakfast and meals, a small bar. Rooms are good with around half of them having good views.
