Opinion: On a good part of town. The area is part of Leith Walk near the restaurants/ bars/ theatres and gay quarter on the way to Leith. Refurbished from office block with internet, cafe and every typical facility. Clean, efficient rooms that can accommodate from singles to family 4-8 beds.

Smartcity Hostels

Location: 50 Blackfrairs Street

Opinion: A hostel with hotel-like facilities without loosing the ethnicity. Good location and smart feel. Huge building with an opening to Cowgate as well. Bar, self-service restaurant, self-catering kitchens. 630 rooms around the interior courtyard. Occupancy varies from 2-12.

Royal Mile Backpackers

Location: 105 High Street

Opinion: Economical 24-hour crash-out dorm accommodation with all expected facilities needed for a capital experience. Ideal location on the Royal Mile near Cowgate with its happening nightlife. Some of the beds offer panoramic views of the Grassmarket or the Castle. The same company also owns The High Street Hostel and the Castle Rock.

Globetrotter Inn

Location: Marine Drive Cramond

Opinion: The first and flagship venture of the hostel chain on Cramond foreshore. Clean and comfortable. Leisure: spa, gym, internet, shop. A bit out of the downtown, at around half an hours drive. Last bus at 11.20 pm. Greenery and riverside view.

St. Christopher Inn

Opinion: Convenient to the station or city centre. Bunk rooms available both single and double. The cafe-bar on the ground floor is open till 1 am. Good facilities and central location - but not so inexpensive. Internet.

Belford Hostel

Opinion: Fairly central near the Gallery of Modern Art and Dean Village. A converted church with 98 beds in partitioned-off spaces. Nice stained glass work. Leisure: Games room, bar, MTV. Vaulted wooden ceiling.

Opinion: Oozing a funky-Euro feel. The biggest accommodation (300+) right in the heart of the city with a great backpacker. Accommodation in doubles, triples and quads. A short walk from the Coach and Rail station.

Opinion: Centrally located at the east end of Princes St. Budget accommodation. 4 doubles, 100 beds altogether. Basic. Mix with the people all over the world.

Opinion: Georgian building - the new B&B in West End. Stunning fireplace, immense spiral carved staircase, great wood carvings on the door, domed roof. Economical. Accommodation for 2/4/6/8/10/20 configurations.

Argyle Backpackers Hotel
