Best Edinburgh Hotels from Travel Scotland

Best Edinburgh Hotels - For a small city, Edinburgh is packed with hotels and accommodation. Every year more are built: here is a selection of the best.

Prestonfield House

Location: 1.5 miles to the South of the centre and a little distance except for the intrepid walker.

Phone: 0131 668 3346 (Late Deals and Special Rates: 0870 735 0296/+44 161 831 3753 (International))

Opinion: Sumptuous experience in a truly historic house: sleep in the same rooms as Benjamin Franklin, General Eisenhower, Frank Sinatra and Margaret Thatcher (!). Quite what they would make of the velvet and brocade that decks the place now is anybody's guess. Rooms are lovely, food excellent. As a site for seduction or the refreshing of love: simply peerless.

The Balmoral

Location: Dead centre of town beside Waverley Station on Princes Street.

Phone Number: 0131 556 2414 (Late Deals and Special Rates: 0870 735 0296/+44 161 831 3753 (International))

Opinion: Notably historic Edinburgh hotel that used to be owned by the railway companies. Now owned by equally notable hotelier Rocco Forte and a combination of old style hotel with boutique trimmings. A big hotel but with sometimes small rooms. The best characteristic is the location which is excellent and the restaurants and bars.

The Caledonian Hilton

Location: West End of Princess Street, 2 blocks from Edinburgh Castle and 3 blocks from the Convention Centre.

Phone: 0131 222 8888 (Late Deals and Special Rates: 0870 735 0296/+44 161 831 3753 (International))

Opinion: A former station hotel built in 1903 is now owned by the Hilton Group. A capital place with good facilities but a wee bit nonuniform in all the rooms. Executive rooms and Deluxe rooms have great views. Its fantastic location, restaurants and bars are the major pullers.

The Sheraton Grand

Location: On Lothian Road and Conference Centre at the city-centre.

Phone: 0131 229 9131 (Late Deals and Special Rates: 0870 735 0296/+44 161 831 3753 (International))

Opinion: A historic hotel nestled in the shadows of the Edinburgh Castle offering easy access to Princess St, the financial district and the Georgian New Town. The hotel is a good stopover for business and fun travelers. The large rooms and castle view rooms carry premiums but well worth the money.

Channings

Location: South Learmonth Gardens parallel to Queensferry Rd.

Phone: 0131 315 2226 (Late Deals and Special Rates: 0870 735 0296/+44 161 831 3753 (International))

Opinion: Friendly and informal - a welcome alternative to the impersonal big-chain hospitality. 5 Edwardian period houses stringed to form this West End Hotel. Shackleton suites on the top floor have awesome views and fab bathrooms. Good restaurant, under the able hands of Chef Karen Mackay, with a versatile menu and great service. Spa is one of the best in the country.

Royal Terrace

Location: Minutes walk from city-centre on the Royal Terrace.

Phone: 0131 557 3222 (Late Deals and Special Rates: 0870 735 0296/+44 161 831 3753 (International))

Opinion: This multi-townhouse hotel is part of a Georgian Terrace backing on to Calton Hill. The decor is on the Baroque side with large rooms, and a private multi-level terraced garden on the backyard. Dine alfresco in style. Good for both business and pleasure.

Radisson SAS

Location: Dead centre of town on the Royal Mile.

Phone: 0131 225 1251 (Late Deals and Special Rates: 0870 735 0296/+44 161 831 3753 (International))

Opinion: Oozing the smart Radisson contemporary feel and handy for everything. The facilities are quite good, but maybe a little lacking in the service. Rooms are good but not any mentionable views. For leisure guests can use the hotel's small pool; the bar and restaurant are also good.

The George

Location: On George St between Hanover St and St Andrew Sq.

Phone: 0131 225 1251 (Late Deals and Special Rates: 0870 735 0296/+44 161 831 3753 (International))

Opinion:Designed by Robert Adam and dating back to the late 18th century, the hotel has been recently refurbished by the Principal Hotel Group. With the image make-over it now dons a more progressive look. Good restaurant and bar. Top 3 floors offer good views. A tad expensive but can safely say its well worth the money.
