We have selected a range of books about Scotland that we have enjoyed ourselves, have had strong reports about, or fill a specific niche.
We have divided the scottish books section into different sections and included links to Amazon in the UK and in the USA for those who wish to buy online before arrival, which is very wise in our view. Click on the flags to buy from either the UK or USA.
Footprint Guide to Scotland
Part of a series of British Isles travel guides, this is a comprehensive guide to the whole of Scotland from Edinburgh's art galleries to the beaches of Harris. Written by an author who has a close knowledge and understanding of the country, it provides background information on Scotland's culture and history, while giving information for travellers on practicalities and activities. We rate this the best of all the Scottish Guides
Scotland the Best 2005
Iindispensible guide to the very best that Scotland has to offer. First published in 1993. This is the guide to help you experience all that is excellent about Scotland. Whether you live here or are visiting, why settle for the second-rate when you can be guided to so much that is superb? Peter Irvine's personal guide provides thousands of recommendations covering a multitude of topics including the best places to stay (whatever your budget), the best beaches, the best ice-cream, the best hill walks, the best bakers, the best spooky places, the best seafood, the best places for kids, the best ceildhs, and so the list goes on.
Rough Guide to Scotland
Highly recommended, typical Rough Guide with exhaustive treatment of everything and inquisitive about the social and economic stuff as well. We prefer footprint guide (above) but it is a near run between the two. The problem is that for a short stay, it offers far too many choices and options and so does not really help you choose.
Rough Guide to Edinburgh
a definitive pocket handbook to Scotland's capital, featuring: informed accounts of all the city's historic buildings, galleries and attractions, from the ancient Castle to the new National Museum of Scotland; insider's tips on the best places to stay, drink and eat, for all budgets; the pick of the day-trips, including Glasgow, Stirling and St. Andrews, as well as Highland walks and sandy beaches; and full-colour maps with grid references for every attraction and recommendation.
Rough Guide to Scottish Highlands
The third edition of the Rough Guide to the Scottish Highlands and Islands is the complete handbook to this dramatic and varied region. There are accounts of most attractions, from castles, lochs and mountains, to deserted beaches and classic train journeys. For every town and village there are reviews of places to stay, eat and drink that give a candid opinion. The authors also provide tips on the many outdoor activities available, from munro bagging to skiing and mountain biking.
