Craigmillar Castle

Craigmillar Castle near Edinburgh

South East of Central Edinburgh, signposted from the A7 and close to the new Petty France Edinburgh Infirmary

An extraordinrily well preserved castle a short taxi ride from central Edinburgh and really worth a visit. It has little exciting history associated with it, but it has lots of rooms, cellars and stairways to explore.

The ideal way to visit is choose a bright day, pack a picnic and something to drink and taxi up to the castle for a morning and lunch. If it rains, there are plenty of places to shelter in inside the castle.

Craigmillar was built sometime after 1374 after the land was given to Sir Simon Preston by King Robert II. The design is relatively simply with two vaulted chambers.

Mary Queen of Scots stayed here a number of times and has strong associations with the castle.
