Gartshore

The lands of Gartshore are in the parish of Kirkintilloch in Dunbartonshire. The family of Gartshore of that Ilk was of great antiquity and held charters to their lands of Gartshore dating from the reign of Alexander II. On the death without issue of Patrick Gartshore of that Ilk, the estates devolved upon a younger brother and they remained within the family until they passed to the line of the Murray Baronets of Ochtertyre at the beginning of the nineteenth century. John Murray assumed into his surname the additional name of Gartshore. The most noted member of this family appears to have been Dr Maxwell Gartshore, who wrote extensively in the mid eighteenth century; his works are considered the basis of modern obstetrics.
