Glen

The lands of Glen, from which the family of Glen of that Ilk took its name, are in the parish of Traquair in Peeblesshire. A magnificent castle still stands on these lands, although it was built for the family of Tennant, now Lords Glenconner. Colban de Glen received a charter from Robert the Bruce in 1328 confirming him in his lands in the sheriffdom of Peebles. Thomas de Glen was granted a safe conduct to travel to England in 1422. John Glenn travelled considerably further when he was launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida, USA, in the space capsule Friendship VII, to orbit the earth on 20 February 1962. He was thereafter elected a senator for the state of Ohio and made an unsuccessful attempt to become the Democratic Party candidate for the presidency of the United States in 1984
