There are numerous sandy beaches close at hand and rocky areas supporting seals and sea otters. With quiet roads and forest tracks for the mountain biker and for the serious walker, the 87-mile Kintyre Way from Tarbert to Southend is a challenge. Try lunch or afternoon tea whilst enjoying spectacular coastal views and visit castles at Skipness, Tarbert or Saddell. Ancient chapels, standing stones and forts are dotted round the peninsula in unspoilt locations. Davaar Island with its cave painting is a good brisk walk at low tide and the Isle of Gigha, off the west coast, offers a splendid day out. There is ferry access to the Isle of Arran with its splendid Brodick Castle and for those who wish to travel further for distilleries, ornithology and dramatic isolation the Isles of Islay, Jura and Colonsay are also accessible from Kintyre. Campbeltown was once proclaimed the ’Whisky Capital of the World’ with 34 distilleries of which only two, Glen Scotia and Springbank remain. The latter is home to the famous single malt of that name and tours round the distillery are greatly enjoyed. Campbeltown boasts a museum, Heritage Centre, a leisure centre/library and café, and the oldest ‘Picture House’ in Scotland. The town also has two supermarkets, independent shops and excellent hotels and restaurants, offering the finest local produce. The golfer is spoiled for choice with 18 holes at Machrihanish, M.Dunes and nearby Dunaverty and 9 holes at Carradale, Gigha and Tarbert. Shop and pub 1 mile.
