The Galloway Forest Park and the Mabie Forest, famed for off-road cycling and walking, are both within easy reach.
The coastal Solway area has many varied towns with art, craft and antique shops as well as beautiful sandy or rocky beaches to explore. In and around Dumfries there are many locations associated with Robert Burns.
