West Mainland is the largest part of the largest island in Orkney and offers the visitor an unrivalled richness and diverse variety of attractions. The parish of Rendall lies on the north east side of West Mainland and at Dingwall, the harbour hosts a number of Orkney fishing boats as well as the ro-ro ferry to the islands of Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre. Mainland offers delightful villages dotted through farmland with spectacular cliff scenery along the Atlantic coastline, sheltered sandy bays and unrivalled hill and moorland vistas. Visitors will enjoy discovering the fascinating history - from the famous prehistoric village at Skara Brae through to the period of Norse and Viking rule, the Renaissance architecture of the early 17th century and right up to date. Orkney does not just offer historic interest however - the islanders lead a rich, full life and many recreational activities can be enjoyed including cycling, deep sea diving, golf, pony trekking, loch and sea fishing (excellent brown trout fishing lochs), sailing and boat hire. There are art, flower, drama and music Festivals held throughout the summer months and visitors are made very welcome. The islands are also abundant in wildlife, with many rare seabirds to be seen and wonderful wild flowers. No trip to Orkney is complete without exploring the smaller islands - each one has its own unique charm and character.

Customer Reviews of Lower Midgarth, Orkney Isles - Sleeps 7
Couldn't have asked for a better cottage. For us (7 of us) the location and facilities were perfect. The seperate building with the pool table was a major selling point for my sons. On finding the guitar, drum set and keyboard, they thought they had died and gone to heaven. Getting them to leave the cottage to explore Orkney was difficult. The only slightly down side was a lack of a lock on the utility room with the second shower but perfectly manageable. The key store was a great advantage when we went in seperate directions.
House very good with everything you could want, but broken vacuum cleaner. The only problem we had was we could not get into key safe top get the key. No answer from keyholder/cleaner, no answer from owner and Mackays closed at 5pm.We managed to contact caretaker through locals, fortunately he had a spare key as he could not get into key safe. Without the help of locals there was no way we could know caretaker as his details were left inside house.
"peaceful and pleasurable"
House is extremely comfortable and well-equipped. Orkney is a very windy place, but the garden and outdoor area always has a sheltered spot. Rural Orkney is beautiful and conducive to peace of mind. Can't recommend Lower Midgarth sufficiently highly.
"Superb cottage for a quiet relaxing holiday. "
Well furnished, well appointed and very comfortable. A cot would have been useful. A peaceful place to rest and relax. On the downside, one room had not been cleaned properly, the bedding was dirty and the room was infested with spiders.
