Historical base

Monkstadt has played a romantic role in Highland history. Originally the seat of Clan Macdonald in 1730 when they abandoned Duntulm Castle, it is reputed to have been the first slated house on Skye, and was described by James Boswell in 1773 as a ‘considerable building’.

This single storey barn conversion is situated in the original steading, which includes a granary, stable, cartshed and mill – all of which have been sympathetically converted into holiday accommodation.

This makes an ideal base for exploring the Isle of Skye, with Flora Macdonalds monument and ruined Duntulm Castle both nearby. The Quirang and Old Man of Storr offer unrivalled walking and climbing whilst the beauty, wildlife and numerous outdoor pursuits appeal to all ages.

Shop, pub and restaurant 3 miles.

All on ground floor: Living/dining room/kitchen. 1 double bedroom. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

Elec CH and elec inc (£10pw Oct-Apr). Bed linen and towels inc. DVD. W/machine. Shared lawned garden and furniture. Parking (1 car).

Customer Reviews of Monkstadt Steading Stables, Skye - Sleeps 2

1st comment: Don’t be deterred by the short drive down an unmade track to reach the cottage. Once there you will find it’s location ideal with fantastic views across the coast, to the Isles of Lewis and Harris, and if you have good weather then spectacular sunsets. The cottage is ideally situated for accessing and exploring Skye and also for Uist and the ferry across to Harris. During Summer the ferry timetables allow you the opportunity of a day trip. If you just wanted an opportunity for peace and quiet then this is also an ideal location. I found some of the furnishing a little dated/tired but I suppose this is down to your own personal preferences. Otherwise the cottage is well equipped for all your needs. June 2011.
