Superb location and beautiful rooms if you avoid the cheaper central rooms without a view. The spa is not up to Sheraton standard for drama and outlook but wins plaudits from the critics. For the tourist seeking a perfect weekend away: this could be an ideal choice. If you are arriving by train from London, this hotel could not be closer!

The bedrooms have an authentic character borrowed from the original design themes of the hotel. All rooms are individually designed and include Broadband - Highspeed internet air conditioning, telephones with voice messaging, 30-channel interactive TV, fax machine with copy and laptop printing features, private safe, hairdryer, trouser press, mini-bar and marble bathroom. Dining options at the Balmoral include the elegant and Michelin-starred Number One and the more casual Hadrian's Brasserie. Afternoon tea is served in the high-ceilinged Palm Court - not quite Claridges in London, but fine other. In addition to the standard rates, the hotel's website offers "Simply Balmoral" seasonal discounts among other package deals.

Customers tend to applaud the staff for being friendly and helpful with the right level of attention. Food is also lauded for quality and freshness with the staff helping to make it even better. The concierge really knows his staff as you would expect and seems to be pretty competitive with doing better than the Scotsman hotel over the bridge which is the nearest competitor to the Balmoral hotel
Where the hotel seems to fall down is with the smaller rooms (see above) with the smallest not being described as 5 star at all.
Likewise occassional ineptitude by staff suggests that management needs to keep an eye on customer relations and ensure that 5 star standards are maintained.
Don't bring a car. This hotel is ideal for the railway traveller. Visit with a first class ticket for the ideal break.
The hotel is criticised for lacking character despite bekilted frontmen and tweely named suites (see Daily Telegraph reviews). Certainly the hotel has a slightly "international" flavour which is not quite Sheraton but lacks a little of distinctive local flavour.
