Prestonfield House, ( 5 star historic hotel)
When describing Prestonfield House one reaches for sumptious adjectives to go with its rich brocaded style and generally regency fustian decadence. This is really a place for gout and tobacco and a dozen mistresses. Really, I mean it!

For a long Prestonfield simply traded on it long historic connections that they combined with slapdash service and uncomfortable conditions. No More! Prestonfield is now a luscious and sumptious orgy of brocade, deep sofas, deep rich colours and general hedonism. One could almost imagine syphalitic courtesans dallying with gouty scottish aristos. Of course it is not like that but it certainly is romantic and it simply makes you yearn for an afternoon tryst in the bed with a lover and long conversations with a bottle of claret.
As you might imagine, it is just the thing for the jaded palates of travel journalists who have lavished it with praise:

Prestonfield was built as the grand baroque home of
Edinburgh’s Lord Provost in 1687, to the designs of
Sir William Bruce who had just completed the Royal
Palace of Holyroodhouse down the road.
Designed to impress and delight its many famous
visitors, you will find Prestonfield remains just as
splendid today – possibly even more so – with many
of the original furnishings now lavishly restored and
luxuriously opulent decoration throughout.
Totally sumptuous in every way, Prestonfield was
named as both the AA Hotel of the Year 2005 and as
Scotland’s Most Romantic Hotel, with Conde Nast
Traveller considering it so extravagant it’s like walking
onto the set of some flamboyant costume drama.
Flamboyant, decadent, opulent, luxurious! You’ll find that each of Prestonfield’s 24 indulgent
rooms, decorous suites and chic salons are all these and more, and with Rhubarb – the ultimate
destination restaurant located here – you’ll be tempted not to leave. Should you stray, you’ll find
us just moments from the bustle of the Royal Mile or the designer shopping delights of George
Street, but as Prestonfield is still surrounded by its 20 acres of glorious grounds and Royal
Holyrood Park too, you’ll have a great night’s sleep and wake to a wonderful view!
