Whatever the Edinburgh climate might throw at you, the sun always seems to be shining in Tapas Ole in the Capital's Eyre Place.

The bright red and yellow Mediterranean style dcor and the genuine friendliness of the staff certainly help create a wonderfully warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Add to that some excellent tapas and a spot of serenading by a Spanish guitarist (on some nights) and even the dreichest Scottish day will start to look brighter.

The menu recommends customers choose only two or three tapas per person and when you see the size of the portions you'll realize the wisdom of this advice. In fact two is probably more than enough unless you're very hungry.

We decide to go for a mix and match of spicy chicken, seafood stew - a maritime medley including tuna and mussels - spicy meatballs and Spanish cheese and cold meats.

The first and last of these come garnished with salad. The stew and the meatballs are served just as they are but need no extra adornments. They are both particularly delicious. There is also a fairly varied range of vegetarian tapas including Spanish omelette, potato dishes and ratatouille.

If the tapas, all priced between 2.25 and 6.50, are not enough to tame the appetite there is also a choice of some devilishly tempting desserts, mostly containing lots of ice cream and even more chocolate.

There is also a selection of coffees and liqueurs including some traditional Spanish favourites. Or you can do what we did and stick with the wine, sit back in the old church chairs (complete with kneeling cushion!) which provide the seating and soak up that lovely Spanish atmosphere.

Maravilloso! .
