Glasgow Restaurants

Glasgow - Glasgow

There are chain restaurants, bars and fast-food outlets everywhere in Glasgow. The city also has a large number of independentally owned local restaurants. For those who are on a budget, the set-price lunch menus offered at expensive restaurants prove to be affordable and are a wise choice.

For those on a tight budget, many city restaurants offer cheap business lunches. Pre-theatre dinner menus also provide an opportunity to sample some of the finest food at affordable prices, if you don't mind eating before 1900.

Many of Glasgow's restaurants are open 7 days a week.

Glasgow's culinary renaissance continues unabated. Glasgow has always boasted a wide selection of ethnic eateries, particularly Indian, Chinese and Italian restaurants, and these have been joined by a growing number of cuisines from around the globe. Scottish cuisine is also well represented, reflecting the growing trend of marrying traditional Scottish ingredients with continental and international flavours and styles.

Vegetarians are also well catered for. Though there aren't too many exclusively vegetarian or vegan restaurants, most places now offer substantial and imaginative vegetarian menus.

Glasgow also reflects the move away from strict culinary national boundaries and towards a more international style.

Its many bistros and brasseries feature wide-ranging menus which incorporate everything from Mediterranean cooking to Pacific Rim specialities.

They also tend to be more lively and informal places to eat, as well as offering good value for money. And this is one of the city's great strengths. Compared to other cities (ie London), you can eat well and in some style without breaking the bank.

The greatest concentration of eating places is around Byres Road in the West End, which is heavily populated by students and therefore the best area for cheap, stylish places to eat.

The Merchant City contains most of the designer brasseries, which are more expensive, but many of the bars serve good food at reasonable prices. Some of the places listed below also appear in the Bars section.

Cafés are often good value places to eat, and these are also listed separately.
