South Glasgow Bars

Glasgow - Glasgow

There are a large number of drinking dens in South Glasgow where you can experience the real local bonhomie. South Glasgow is one place that has everything from pre-club pubs and airy modern bars to trendy wine bars.

As regards the opening hours, the licensing regulations of Glasgow are pretty liberal. From Sunday to Thursday most of the bars remain open until midnight. Friday and Saturday, bars are open for a longer time, say until 1 am.

Boswell Hotel 27 Mansionhouse Hotel. Lively Queen's Park favourite with a good selection of real ales and regular live music sessions. Noted for its good food; also has rooms (See also 'Glasgow Accommodation and hotels section').

The Church on the Hill 16 Algie St. Popular Southside bar housed in an old church. Stained glass windows, beer garden, contemporary menu and DJs preach to the converted at weekends.

Heraghty's Free House 708 Pollockshaws Rd. The best pint of Guinness in Glasgow in an old-style Irish pub with old-style hospitality and old-style prices (no need for happy hours here). And they even have a ladies' toilet, proving that everything comes to those who wait!

Samuel Dow's 69-71 Nithsdale Rd. Or Sammy Dow's as it's known by its many Shawlands regulars. A friendly Southside local serving good ale and cheap bar food. Also regular live folk music nights.

The Taverna 778 Pollockshaws Rd. Popular Southside venue near the Tramway Theatre and Queen's Park. Nice, bright Mediterranean look and feel which extends to their love of kids. Good selection of ales and European beers and good value food, especially their pre-theatre dinner. Next door is a good Greek restaurant.
