There's no shortage of good places to eat in Aberdeen, though prices tend to be higher than elsewhere in the region. Many of the city's pubs and bars serve good-value meals, though many of them don't serve food in the evening.
Expensive
Courtyard on the Lane, Alford La, Tel. 213795, just off the west end of Union St. Highly rated bistro serving imaginative Scottish/European menu, with a more formal restaurant upstairs. Open Tue-Sat.
Gerard's, 50 Chapel St, Tel. 639500. This très cher traditional French restaurant has been around for as long as anyone can remember and remains one of the best; the set meal is less of a strain on the bank balance. Open daily.
Silver Darlings Restaurant, Pocra Quay, North Pier, Footdee, at the southern end of the Beach Esplanade, Tel. 576229. Highly recommended as serving the best seafood in town, also a great location overlooking the harbour entrance, best to book in advance. Open Mon-Fri 1200-1400, Mon-Sat 1900-2130.
Simpson's, 59 Queen's Rd, Tel. 327777. Designer brasserie serving superb Scottish cuisine with an international flavour. Open daily.
Mid-range
Little Italy, 79 Holborn St, Tel. 515227, near the west end of Union St. Usual pasta and pizza fare. Open late (till 2400 Mon-Wed and till 0200 Thu-Sat).
Owlie's, Littlejohn St, T649267. French brasserie food with some interesting variations and good vegetarian/vegan options, very popular, so good atmosphere and good value. Open Mon-Sat.
Poldino's, 7 Little Belmont St, Tel. 647777, one of the city's favourite Italian restaurants, so it's always busy.
The Royal Thai, Crown Terr (off Crown St), Tel. 212922. Long-established Thai restaurant with wide-ranging menu. Open daily for lunch and 1900-2300.
The Wild Boar, 19 Belmont St, Tel. 625357. Popular bar-bistro serving good-value food, plenty of vegetarian choices, and just look at those cakes! Open daily.
Cheap
Ashvale, 46 Great Western Rd, Tel. 596981. The northeast's most famous, and best, fish and chips, quite simply unmissable. This is the original branch and it's huge, with seating for 300; also takeaway. Open daily till late.
Another superb chippie, some say better, is The New Dolphin on Chapel St. Mostly takeaway and open till 0100 (0300 at weekends).
Carmine's Pizza, 32 Union Terr, Tel. 624145. Best pizza in town and excellent-value 3-course lunches. Open Mon-Sat 1200-1730.
The Lemon Tree, 5 West North St, Tel. 642230. Café inside the excellent arts centre (see also 'Entertainment'). Relaxed and laid-back place for a light vegetarian lunch, or coffee and cakes. Open Wed-Sun 1200-1500.
