As you'd expect in Scotland's major tourist city, Edinburgh has a huge selection of places to stay - hotels, guesthouses, apartments and hostels. Probably more than any other place in Britain outside London. Many of the hotels are concentrated in the New Town, the Edinburgh Old Town and the West End, particularly around Princes St, Calton Hill and the streets north of Haymarket station. There are also hundreds of guest houses and B&Bs dotted all over the city. There are several areas which have a particularly high concentration, all within about 2 miles of the centre and all on main bus routes, such as Bruntsfield and Mayfield, both south of the centre, Pilrig, east of the city centre heading towards Leith, and west from Haymarket along the Corstorphine Rd. Many hotels offer good deals during the low season, especially at weekends, and also offer a standby room rate throughout the year. This can save a lot of money but can also involve a lot of frustrating legwork.
There are also 4 official SYHA hostels and several independent hostels, most of which are convenient, and a couple of campsites which are not too far from the centre. Most of the universities and colleges offer campus accommodation, but this is neither cheap nor centrally located. Another option, if you're staying a week or more, is self-catering, which is cost-effective, or you can rent a room or flat.
