Good all-day breakfasts (also vegetarian) and reasonably priced snacks. Good pre-club meeting place. Open daily 1100-2300 (until 1AM on Friday and Saturday nights). Centotre, 103 George Street. Established by Victor from Valvona & Crolla. ex-bank building offers excellent coffees, wonderful atmosphere and very fresh Italian food Open Mon-Sat 1000-2200, Sun 1200-1900

Circus Cafe, 15 North West Circus Place. Tel: 0131 220 0333 Fantastic brasserie restaurant in Stockbridge. Circus Café offers a customer experience like no other – where first-time visitors quickly turn in to regulars. Superb wine shop downstairs. Open Mon-Sat 1000-2300, Sun 1000-1800

Vincaffe 11 Multrees Walk. Bang next to Harvey Nichols and other fashion boutiques and offering the very best of Valvona & Crolla fare. Recommend a good strong coffee before spending. Good for lunch but not without a reservation. Open Mon-Sat 1000-2200, Sun 1200-1900

Glass & Thompson, 2 Dundas St, Tel: 5570909. Coffee shop and deli with the emphasis on quality food. Popular with local residents who know a good thing when they see (and taste) it. Open Mon-Fri 0830-1830, Sat 0830-1730, Sun 1100-1630.

The Laigh Bake House, 117a Hanover St, Tel: 2251552. Downstairs from the hustle and bustle is a quiet little corner of the Orkneys and Edinburgh's oldest coffee house. Nothing to disturb the peace and stillness save the ticking of the clock and the rustling of newspapers and the occasional squeal of delight from someone tasting the indescribably delicious hazelnut meringue gateau for the very first time. The food is made from purely organic ingredients. Open Mon-Sat 0830-1700.

The Queen Street Café, The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, 1 Queen St, Tel: 5572844. The best scones and caramel shortcake in town, not to mention excellent value snacks and light meals, served in grand surroundings. No smoking. Open Mon-Sat 1000-1630, Sun 1400-1630.

Starbucks, Waterstone's, 128 Princes St, Tel: 2263610. Features the usual wide range of coffees but the reason it merits inclusion is the wonderful view of the castle. Popular with browsers, shoppers and as a meeting point. No smoking. Open Mon-Sat 0800-2000, Sun 1030-1800.

Terrace Café, Royal Botanic Garden, Inverleith Row, Tel: 5520616. Set in the grounds next to Inverleith House, this is little more than a school canteen, but the views of the castle, Old Town and Arthur's Seat take some beating. No smoking. Open daily 0930-1800.

Valvona & Crolla, 19 Elm Row, Tel: 5566066. More authentically Italian than almost anything you'd find in New York. Great home cooking and the best cappuccino in town. Needless to say, somewhere this good is very, very popular. No smoking. Open Mon-Sat 0800-1700.

Palm Court Balmoral Hotle, 1 Princess Street, Tel: 5562414 It is great place to have your afternoon tea, select from Balmoral, Tartan and Chocolate teas and have a great time in a cosy ambinace. Open-daily 0900-0100.
