Bar Ce Lona, 2-8 West Crosscauseway, Tel: 6628860. Mediterranean-style bar with civilized table service and al fresco eating. Try their flavoured margaritas or enjoy brunch on a sunny Sun. Live bands and DJs at weekends. Open daily 1100-0100.
Bennet's Bar, 8 Leven St, Tel: 2295143. Next to the King's Theatre. Marvel at the carved wooden gantry, the stained-glass windows, the huge mirrors, and the glass-topped tables with inlaid city maps while you enjoy a great pint of beer and perhaps some good old-fashioned (and cheap) food (served in the back room at lunch-times only). One of the city's finest traditional howffs. Open Mon-Wed till 2330, Thu-Sat till 0030, Sun till 2300.
The Canny Man's, 237 Morningside Road. Part museum/part pub that's been serving good real ale and a vast smorgasbord of sandwiches in most interesting surroundings since Victoria was on the throne, and probably to the same bunch of regulars. A word of caution. If the publican doesn't like the look of you, you'll be out on yer ear. Open Mon-Sat till 2400, Sun till 2300. The Pear Tree, 38 West Nicolson St, Tel: 6677533. Near the University, so a favourite student haunt, this was once a focal point for the city's crusties but now the occasional suit can be spotted. Boasts Edinburgh's only decent-sized beer garden, which is not only packed in summer, but populated at other times of the year. Also serves amazingly cheap food. Sheep Heid Inn, 43 The Causeway, Duddingston, Tel: 6566951. An 18th- century coaching inn that makes a pleasant stop for a refreshing drink after a walk over Arthur's Seat. You could make a day of it and include Duddingston Loch and village and lunch here in the restaurant upstairs or in the bar. Either way it's good. In summer there's the added attraction of the open-air barbecue. Open Mon-Wed and Sun till 2300, Thu-Sat till 2400.
Blue Blazer 2 Spittal Street, Tel: 229 5030. Perfect place to spend a nice time with friends and enjoy some pints. Serves a variety of drinks in a warm ambiance. Open Mon-Sat 1100-0100, Sun 1230-0100.
Dragonfly 52 West Port, Tel: 228 4543 Dragonfly is an impressive plush coctail bar with great variety of drinks and superb ambiance. You may find hints of Graham Nortons stage set in the decor.
