The Quaich Coffee Shop
If you are doing a tour of Perthshire or a tour of Scotland, stop at The Quaich Coffee Shop which is situated in the heart of Aberfeldy, just along from the village square. Deirdre and Alan welcome you in to relax in a pleasant, friendly atmosphere and enjoy a soothing cup of coffee or tea, satisfy your hunger pangs with a snack or light meal or indulge yourself with one of the many cakes on display, while having a chat, reading a paper or just taking the weight off your feet and watching the world go by.
Wade's Bridge
The River Tay is spanned by Wade's Bridge, built by General Wade in 1773 during his campaign to pacify the Highlands. Overlooking the bridge is the Black Watch Monument which commemorates the famous regiment becoming part of the British Army's peacekeeping force here, in 1739. In Mill Street is the Aberfeldy Water Mill, built in 1825 and restored in 1983 to produce stone-ground oatmeal in the traditional Scottish way. Easter-Oct Mon-Sat 1000-1700, Sun 1200-1630.
Dewar's World of Whisky
Just outside Aberfeldy is Dewar's World of Whisky, one of a new breed of distillery visitor centres. You start your visit in the heritage centre where there's an audio guide and interactive exhibits informing you all about whisky and the Dewar family. Then you go on a guided tour of the distillery which ends, of course, with a chance to taste the product. Apr-end Oct Mon-Sat 1000-1800, Sun 1200-1600, Nov-Mar Mon-Fri 1000-1600. Tel. 822010.
Castle Menzies & House of Menzies
A mile west of Aberfeldy, across the Tay at Weem, is Castle Menzies, an impressive, restored 16th-century 'Z-plan' fortified tower-house, the former seat of the chief of Clan Menzies. Apr-mid Oct Mon-Sat 1030-1700, Sun 1400-1700. Tel. 820982.
Not far away at Castle Menzies Farm, is House of Menzies, a tourist store with a coffee shop. It's got an excellent selection of New World wines and is a good place to buy gifts such as Scottish jewellery. Apr-end Oct Mon-Sat 1000-1700, Sun 1100-1700; Oct-Dec closed Mon; Jan-Apr, Thu, Fri 1000-1700, Sat, Sun 1100-1700. Tel. 829666
Birks of Aberfeldy
A popular local walk is to the Falls of Moness, through the famous Birks of Aberfeldy, forever associated with the poet Robert Burns who was inspired by the birks (birch trees) to write his eponymous song. It's a fairly easy walk along a marked trail (see map) up to the impressive falls, and the views of Strathtay and the surrounding hills on the descent also make it worthwhile. It's about four miles there and back.
Rafting, Canyoning, Cliff Jumping and Abseiling
For a fun day out and to see parts of Scotland that few people have White Water Rafting is an ideal option. Canyoning and Cliff Jumping certainly gets the heart racing.
