Expensive

The Atrium, 10 Cambridge St (same building as the Traverse Theatre), Tel: 2288882. Award-winning Scottish cooking in elegant modern surroundings. This outstanding restaurant is one of the best in town, but by no means the most expensive. Open Mon-Fri 1200-1430, 1800-2230, Sat 1800-2230. Upstairs is its stylish sister bistro, blue.

Mid Range

Bar Roma, 39a Queensferry St, Tel: 2262977. T raditional Italian serving a huge variety of pasta and pizza to huge numbers of late-night revellers in a fun atmosphere. Open Mon-Thu and Sun 1200-2400, Fri/Sat till 0100.

blue, 10 Cambridge St (upstairs from The Atrium), Tel: 2211222. The stylish and minimalist interior of this leading city bistro attracts the arty and media types as well as the more sober suits. Sister to the outstanding Atrium, so not surprisingly the food on offer is a substantial cut above the rest. Also a great place for a drink, its well-stocked bar boasts a satisfying selection of malts and excellent service. Open Tue-Sat 1200-0100, Sun and Mon till 1200.

Caledonian Alehouse & Bistro, 1-3 Haymarket Terr, Tel: 3371006. Upstairs bistro offering genuine Scottish cuisine at decent prices. Set lunch is excellent value. Open Mon-Thu 1200-1500, 1800-2100, Fri/Sat till 2200, Sun 1800-2200 only.

Howie's, 63 Dalry Rd, Tel: 3133334. Something of an Edinburgh institution, this chain of bistros hits the spot every time with imaginative Scottish food that is always tasty and great value (BYOB policy), in an informal atmosphere. The others are in the New Town and Southside. Open Mon 1800-2200, Tue-Sun 1200-1400, 1800-2200.

The Indian Cavalry Club, 3 Atholl Pl, Tel: 2283282. Classy and exclusive Indian in 'Last days of the Raj' style, and with a deserved reputation for outstanding food. Popular for business lunches, which are great value. Smart dress advised. Open daily 1200-1400, 1730-2330.

Indigo Yard, 7 Charlotte La, Tel: 2205603. This converted and covered-over courtyard has been transformed into an immensely popular bar and restaurant. The menu is cosmopolitan (Thai, Mexican, French, Italian etc) and the food excellent. Serves lunch, dinner and late supper. See also 'Bars'. Open daily 0830-0100.

Jasmine Chinese Restaurant, 32 Grindlay St, Tel: 2295757. Handy for the theatres and cinemas, this stylish and modern Chinese restaurant is better value than most and something a little bit different. Open Mon-Thu 1200-1400, 1700-2330, Fri till 0030, Sat 1400-0030, Sun 1400-2230. Lune Town, 38 William St, Tel: 2201688. Varied and exciting Chinese food served in a cosy, friendly atmosphere. Good dim sum and excellent value set lunch. Open Mon-Thu 1200-1430, 1800-2330, Fri till 2400, Sat 1500-2400, Sun 1600-2300.

Restaurant at the Bonham, 35 Drumsheugh Gdns, Tel: 6239319. This is part of the eponymous hotel and every bit as stylish. Scottish cuisine with a Californian touch and better quality than you could expect at these prices. Open Mon-Fri 1200-1400, 1830-2130, Sat/Sun 1200-1400, 1830-2200.

Sukothai, 23 Brougham Place, Tel: 2291537. This busy little Thai restaurant is very handy for theatres and cinemas so ideal for a quick pre-show bite. Their 'all-you-can-eat' Sun buffet is excellent value.

Cheap

La Cuisine D'Odile, 13 Randolph Cres, Tel: 2255685. Hidden away in the French Institute, this is genuine quality French cuisine at amazingly low prices. Great views from the terrace in the summer. Open Tue-Sat 1200-1400 only.

Oriental Dining Centre, 8-16 Morrison St, Tel: 2211288. Dim Sum bar (open daily 1200-0300), Noodle Shack (open Mon-Sat 1730-0200) and Chinese restaurant (daily 1200-2400) all rolled into one. Good vegetarian selection and fresh seafood daily. Jazz bar downstairs
