The only direct route to Scotland from Europe is on the Smyril Line (Aberdeen Tel: 01224-572615; Faroe Islands Tel: 01-5900) service to Lerwick (Shetland) from Norway (Bergen), Iceland (Seydisfjordur) and the Faroe Islands (Torshavn). It sails from mid-May to early September only once a week and takes 12 hours. A sleeping berth one way from Norway and Faroe Islands costs £63 in high season. You then have to get from Lerwick to Aberdeen. P&O Scottish Ferries (Tel: 10224-572615) sail Monday-Friday from Lerwick to Aberdeen (14 hours; £55 per passenger in high season)

From Northern Ireland Larne to Cairnryan: Irish Sea, Tel: 0870-2424777, Irish Sea Ferries has several crossings daily to Cairnryan. The journey takes one hour. Belfast to Stranraer: Stena Line, Tel: 0870-707070, Stena Line Ferries run numerous ferries (three hours) and high-speed catamarans (1€ hours).
