Girnigoe & Sinclair Castle

Castle Sinclair Girnigoe is located about 3 miles north of Wick on the east coast of Caithness.. It is considered to be one of the earliest seats of Clan Sinclair. It is a ruin in spectacular position on the coast facing north.

Built in the C15th as the main castle for the Sinclair family but by 1700 was already a ruin. It might have destroyed by cannon fire in 1680 but evidence is scanty and it ws probably destroyed by Cromwell's troops.

Today the castle is listed as World heritage site and being investigated and stabilised (see website below). You can walk to it easily from the lighthouse carpark and it is interesting in its own right and also a wonderful location in the early evening as sun sets.
