So we may all be buying ebooks and Kindles, but the pleasure of browsing a good bookshop is far from dead. Here is our list of bookworm favourites.

Bookshops in Edinburgh 

Even in a world where nobody reads (or so the media say), wonderful bookshops still manage to survive and remain filled with the bowed backed eagerly supping at bookish wisdom.

Waterstone's

One of three city branches of this major chain, with a massive range of titles, well-informed staff and a pleasant second-floor café with fantastic views of the castle (see also 'Cafés'). The Cook's Bookshop

118 West Bow, Tel: 2264445. Owned by celebrity chef Clarissa Dickson Wright with a wide selection of new and second-hand cookery books. Open Mon-Fri 1000-1700, Sat 1030-1700.

West Port Bookshop,

145 West Port, Tel: 2294431. Wonderfully ramshackle, old-fashioned second-hand bookshop. Open Mon-Fri 1030-1730, Sat 1130-1700.

T & B Bookcrafts

2 Summer Place, Tel: 556 7857 or 0845 073 1446. More than just a second-hand bookshop. T & B Bookcrafts is run by two highly experienced bookbinders who specialise in the conservation and repair of antiquarian books. The shop showcases their restoration projects which sit comfortably alongside more general second-hand stock. Open Sat 0930-1730, Sun 1230-1630. Web 

Analogue

102, West Bow, Old Town (220 0601) Books related to design and contemporary culture, one can also find book everything from glossy tomes on fashion, illustration, graffiti and graphic design. Analogue also boasts wide range of T-shirts, magazines and prints. Open Mon-Sat 1000-1730. Web 

Deadhead Comics

27 Candlemaker Row EH1 (0131 226 2774). Comics, independent and small press publications. Also fantasy figures and cards.

Body and Soul Books

52 Hamilton Place EH3 (0131 226 3066). Scotland's only bookshop specialising in second hand and remaindered New Age and esoteric books. Also stock incense, etc.
