Perched on top of Calton Hill, Edinburgh's disgrace remains one of the more unusual of the city's sights. This monument, which is a replica of the Parthenon in Greece remained incomplete with only 12 columns completed, which earned the nickname, "Edinburgh's Disgrace".

Climb the steps at Waterloo Place from the east end of Princes Street to Calton Hill, one of the best viewpoints in the city. It is dotted with various strange monuments, the most notable of which are the twelve Doric columns that make up the National Monument – also known as “Edinburgh’s disgrace”. It was designed by William Playfair as a replica of Athens’ Parthenon, but funds ran out in 1829, leaving these columns standing, surreally, on their own.
