Burray in the Orkney Islands is one place to visit with children as the Orkney Fossil and Heritage Centre is in this village. The UV room here, where the rocks give out their iridescent colours, is a big hit with the kids and there's more upstairs, including a rocking horse, books to read and even some war memorabilia.
Burray village is on the south coast of the island and expanded during the herring industry boom. The two-story warehouse used for packing herrings is now the Sands Hotel and you can bet there's fresh fish on the menu here.
