The village of Lasswade, Midlothian, lies on the River North Esk. The 18th-century Barony House here, was earlier known as the Lasswade cottage. This edifice was rented by Sir Walter Scott and it was here that the writer James Hogg (the 'Ettrick Shepherd') and the Wordsworths visited him.
The Melville Castle lies to the north east of this village.
