Balfour Castle Hotel Shapinsay

Balfour Castle on the Orkney Island of Shapinsay is dramatically placed between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea.

Shapinsay is the most accessible part of the northern isles of Orkney and is just a few miles of Kirkwall. The one main thing to see here is Balfour Castle.

The Balfour Castle, in Shapinsay, is designed by David Bryce for the Balfour family of Westray, though the family died out in 1960 it was later bought by a Polish cavalry office, Captain Zawadeski, whose family runs the place as a hotel. Children enjoy the guided tours here and the tour ends with complimentary tea and homemade cakes in the servant quarters.
