Local Sights & Activities for Kinross And Loch Leven

Sightseeing

Loch Leven Castle

On an island in the middle of Loch Leven, and visible from the M90, is the lonely tower of Loch Leven Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned for almost a year at the behest of Queen Elizabeth. She made a dramatic escape in May, 1568, with the help of her young, impressionable jailer. There's not much left of the 14th-century ruin, but it's an evocative place full of romance and history. During the summer a ferry leaves from Kinross to the island. (HS) Apr-Oct Mon-Sat 0930-1730 (ends 1630 Oct).

RSPB Reserve

Not far from Loch Leven – Junction 5 off the M90 – is the RSPB reserve at Vane Farm, Tel. 862355. There are several nature trails to follow and three hides from which to observe the rich bird life of the loch. In autumn and winter you can see thousands of geese, as well as birds such as tufted duck, teal and peregrine. In September you may also see ospreys hunting for fish on the loch. Daily 1000-1700.
