1 Day Steam Trains, Mountains & the Whisky Trail from Inverness
From Inverness we make our way to Grantown on Spey, an attractive planned town built by Sir James Grant in 1766. This handsome community, situated on the River Spey, has attracted visitors since the coming of the railway in Victorian times. We’ll spend some free time here before heading out along the back roads to follow the River Spey into Whisky country.
Whisky is one of Scotland’s most iconic products and the Spey Valley is one of the three main areas for the production of Scotch Whisky or Uisge Beatha, as it’s known in Gaelic. Our journey will take us through sleepy villages, many with their own little distillery, to the pleasant communities of Craigellachie and Dufftown. We stop to visit Glenfiddich Malt Whisky Distillery for a behind the scenes look at the whisky making process. The origin of whisky making is lost in the mists of time but today’s production process owes much to traditional methods. Our tour will introduce you to the distillers art and there is even a taste of the end product too!
The Speyside Railway operates steam trains on a line to Aviemore. We will stop at Broomhill Station (known as Glenbogle Station in the popular BBC series “Monarch of the Glen) where you can board a train and enjoy a nostalgic journey in the heart of the Highlands (optional). Later we will spend some free time in Aviemore before making our way back to Inverness.
INCLUDES: Admission to Glenfiddich malt whisky distillery; transportation by air-conditioned mini-coach; services of a tour host; service charges and taxes.
