White Water Rafting
White Water Rafting

White Water Rafting – Scotland is the UK capital for white water fafting, with some of the best rivers located in the Highlands of Scotland.

Rafting is aun expectedly good way to see Scotland; taking in the beauty, wild life and as you face the rapids you’ll witness the power of water. (Did you know that more water passes down the Tay than the next three rivers in the UK) Depending on which river you’re on will determine how much of a white knuckle ride it will be. The rafts are made up of very thick rubber which holds 8 people plus the guide. They are custom built for white water rafting and are kept in very good condition.

The main rivers used by rafting companies are:

  • River Tay – Grade 1-3
  • River Tummel – Grade 2-4
  • River Orchy – Grade 3-5

River Tay

The River Tay starts its course from Kenmore where it flows out of Loch Tay. In fact there are several tributaries which run into the loch, but they have different names (Rivers Fillan, Dochart and Lochay). The river runs all the way to Dundee into the North Sea, there are two place where you can do rafting, the 1st stretch Upper Tay is in the Aberfeldy area and 2nd stretch Lower Tay is close to Stanley.

The Tay river has one major benefit you can raft it all year. Stanley is about 10 Minutes North of Perth and 1 Hour North of Edinburgh. Aberfeldy is about 30 Minutes North of Perth and 1 hour 30 Minutes from Edinburgh.

River Tummel

The River Tummel starts from Loch Tummel not far North of Pitlochry. The Tummel is one of the best and most exciting white water rapids and runs from May to September. The water is dam released so there is guaranteed water each Saturday, Sunday can be a bit low which means you can easily get stuck on rocks but still great fun.

The river has some fun technical rapids such as the Zig Zag, Bone Yard and Shark Tooth. The final drop is 18 foot, be sure to be holding on! The Tummel is about 30 minutes North of Perth and 1 Hour 30 Minutes from Edinburgh, it is dual carriageway for about 80% of the way.

River Orchy

The River Orchy Very much a weather dependant river. When the weather conditions are right this river is one amazing adrenaline rush. It can be almost a grade 5 from start to finish.

The river will take a full day but its well worth it if you’re into mental sports. It is very difficult to book early because it is so weather dependant but January and February tend to be good times of the year. The River Orchy is about 3 Hours North of Edinburgh.
