The Itinerary Day OneDeparting from Edinburgh we make our way via lonely Rannoch Moor and into the awesome beauty of Glen Coe, scene of the infamous massacre in 1692. There is a stop in the heart of the Glen where you can enjoy these spectacular surroundings. Next we head for Fort William before driving through the dramatic scenery of the Great Glen unfolds ahead of us - first Loch Lochy, then Loch Oich and finally Loch Ness, where we visit Fort Augustus, for some monster spotting. Our tour is based in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands for the next four nights. Please note the stay in Inverness is unescorted.Day TwoToday we enjoy a full day excursion to the beautiful island of Skye by mini-coach. We'll visit Eilean Donan Castle, perched on its island at the head of Loch Duich. You will marvel at the views of Skye from the ramparts when we visit this most picturesque of castles. Soon we'll be crossing 'over the sea to Skye' and visiting the beautiful gardens of the Clan Donald Centre before enjoying the dramatic scenery of the famed Cuillin Mountains. Later we will have time for some beach combing before returning to Inverness.Day ThreeThe emphasis is very much on nature today and we hope to see red deer, seals, puffins (until early August) and hairy Highland cows along the way. Our tour takes us to Golspie then through the lands of the Duke of Sutherland - when you'll hear all about the notorious Highland Clearances. We will pass many stoneage sites before arriving in John-O'Groats. We'll make stops to enjoy the dramatic cliff scenery of the northern coastline before returning to Inverness.Day FourOur journey commences with a drive to the village of Achnasheen. Then the dramatic climb over the “Bealach nam Bo”, which means the Pass of the Cattle, in Gaelic. The Pass is the third highest road in Scotland and climbs to over 2,000 feet! We have plenty free time in Applecross to enjoy our scenic surroundings. There are several walks to discover, an excellent heritage centre to visit and an abundance of wildlife to enjoy.Day FiveThere is an excursion to nearby Culloden Moor followed by free-time in Inverness for shopping or sightseeing. Later join your motorcoach for the return journey to Edinburgh. From Inverness we'll make our way to the gentle Spey Valley then on through the dramatic scenery of the Drumochter Pass - as we do keep a close watch for the deer that often come down to the roadside to graze. We'll make a stop in the popular Victorian resort town of Pitlochry, nestling on the banks of the River Tummel. From Perth we drive through the 'Kingdom' of Fife then over the Forth Road Bridge to journey's end in Edinburgh.
