Bedlam Theatre 11b Bistro Pl, Tel: 2259893. Home of the University's Bedlam Theatre Company. A bit hit or miss but you can always grab a cheap and wholesome bite to eat in the café.

 

Festival Theatre Nicolson St, Tel: 5296000. The city's showcase theatre with a hugely varied programme including the world's leading companies. There's also an excellent café .

Hill Street Theatre 19 Hill St, Tel: 2266522. Homely little venue that's one of the Festival Fringe stalwarts.

King's Theatre 2 Leven St, Tel: 2291201. Refurbished Edwardian theatre showing everything from Shakespeare to panto.

Netherbow Arts Centre 43 High St, Tel: 5569579. Home to the Scottish Storytelling Centre, with children's shows during the day and Scottish drama for adults in the evenings.

Out of the Blue Drill Hall 36 Dalmeny Street, Leith, Tel: 5557101. This place had under went redevelopment to design it apt for various performance, rehearsal and screening. It was used by the International Festival in 2005 for the spanish spectacular Nuts CocoNuts. Web:http://www.outoftheblue.org.uk

Playhouse Theatre 18-22 Greenside Pl, Tel: 5572950. Vast 3,000-seater theatre where you can catch all the glitzy West End productions as well as the occasional rock star. Used during the official Festival for dance and opera.

Pleasance Theatre 60 The Pleasance, Tel: 5566550. One of the top Fringe venues staging comedy and drama. The outdoor cobbled courtyard is a great place to hang out during the Festival for a bit star-spotting.

Royal Lyceum 30 Grindlay St, Tel: 2299697. Lovely old Victorian theatre staging mainstream drama all year round.

Theatre Workshop 34 Hamilton place, Tel: 2265425. Small, accessible and amenable theatre down in bohemian Stockbridge with a reputation for innovative and daring productions.

Traverse Theatre 10 Cambridge St, Tel: 2281404. Internationally renowned theatre dedicated to encouraging the cream of new writing talent. Consistently good entertainment. Also blessed with the excellent restaurant, The Atrium, in the foyer and blue bistro upstairs (see 'Eating'), as well as a good bar (see 'Bars').


Brunton Theatre

This impressive theatre has a comfy 300 seating capacity and produces its own pantomime at Christmas.
