Castles in Aberdeenshire & Moray

Aberdeenshire in Scotland is particularly famous for an extraordinary number of fabulous castles, some of which have been inhabited for at least 600 years. Crombie Castle

Curious mishmash of a castle which is really two L plan house connected together from different periods. Also know as Crommey Castle. Recently undergoing restoration.

Drum Castle Gardens & Estate

14th Century castle of the Irvine family and now National Trust. Wonderful gardens and you can visit inside the castle as well. One of Scotland's oldest tower house castles.

Dunnottar Castle

Striking position overlooking the sea near Stonehaven makes this one of the most inspiring and exciting castles to visit whatever the weather or season!

Fyvie Castle

In the village of Fyvie, Aberdeenshire. 13th Century Castle. This has featured in many Television programmes including Most Haunted.

Inshoch Castle

Ruin of Z Plan towerhouse to the north of Inverness that fell into decay around early 18th century and now is now a romantic ruin. Located beside farm buildings

Old Slains Castle

Original 13th century site of Hay Family castle later replaced. Ruined with single tower still standing. Dramatic position and excellent picnic spot.

Craigievar Castle

Delgatie Castle

C15th Castle near Turriff in excellent condition with long, interesting history. Two bedrooms available for B&B so great opportunity to stay.

Duffus Castle

Located 5 miles north-west of Elgin in Moray on the east coast of Scotland. This typical Norman castle was built in the 14th century on the site of an earlier wooden construction. Today you can walk across the cobbled causeway and explore the stone ruins. It is in the care of Historic Scotland.

Frendraught Castle

Site of 13th century castle, which was torched in 1630. The present house dates from 1656, was remodelled in 1753, extended to 1790, and incorporates a small part of the old castle.

Haddo House

The well known Scottish architect William Adam designed Haddo House in 1732, it is located near Aberdeen and is a phenomenal example of an Scottish highland stately home.

Kildrummy Castle

13th century castle in ruinous state that remains a fine example of the 13th century stronghold. Open to visitors

Lochindorb Castle

Magical lake set castle north of Grantown on Spey on the Lochindorb Estate that was owned by the notorious Wolf of Badenoch. Ruinous, inaccessible but wildly romantic
