Fortingall Yew Tree

Ancient 5000 year old Yew Tree - one of the oldest living things in Europe - much despoiled but fascinating for all that.

Pontius Pilate was said to have been born here (unlikely) but if so, the tree was already 3000 years old at that time. The victorians sadly cut off whole sections as memorabilia but somehow the tree survives. In a world of climate change, it is reminder of the constancy of nature!
