Milovaigs

Not really a place, but two: Upper and Lower Milovaig that are situated on the Duirinish Peninsula in North West Skye

This is a quiet end of Skye beyond the journey of most visitors who get as far as Colbost or Glendale before turning back. These two crofting communities overlook the sea in a relatively uninhabited part of Skye. As with all the rest of Scotland, these lands were once much more inhabited but clearances here as elsewhere left it as we find it today and have left tragic chronicles.

Round the coast at Lorgill in 1830 all the crofters were turned off the land and sent away except for those older than 70 who were sent to the poorhouse.

The village are part of the Glendale Estate which was one of the first community owned estates in Scotland

Eating Out

Posh and expensive, but the Three Chimneys is a short drive away and is something of a treat even if, as some aver, its best days are behind it. There are two restaurants in Dunvegan as well. There is an Inn/Bistro at Waternish - The Stein Inn

Shopping

Closest shopping is in Glendale where there is a small store and post office. There is also a craft fair on Tuesdays. Further afield, there are shops in Dunvegan about nine miles away.

If you are staying for the week, we recommend you stop in Broadford for food and wine supplies for your first two to three days. There is an excellent local Co-op next to the petrol station there.

There is a small but excellent fruit/veg/basic healthfood shed in Dunvegan (10.5 miles) and a general store that sells a bit of everything - including beer and wine.

The nearest large Co-op supermarket is at Portree ( 30 miles).

A local farmer sells some meat and venison.

Travel Directions to Milovaigs

Follow the B884 from south of Dunvegan to the end of the road. This is also the road to the striking Neist Point Lighthouse. A minor turns off the 884 with signs to Neist Point.

Local Sights & Activities for Milovaigs

This is a place for walking and exploring. The most visited location is Neist Point Lighthouse pointing out into the Atlantic.

There is a good circular walk of 2 miles from Mikovaig  - circular walk details as well as a longer (3-5 hour) walk that takes you as far as Neist along the cliffs (link with walk details)
