Newtonmore

Here's our visitor guide to the Highlands village of Newtonmore to the south of Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park.


Newtonmore is located in the  Highlands in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park and for many years was considered to be the geographical centre of Scotland; there's a stone to mark the site on the Glentruim Road near to the Clan Macpherson cairn.  
It's a friendly little village, just over a mile from the A9 and about 14 miles south of Aviemore. It's one of the best locations in Scotland for beautiful scenery and there's a plethora of things to do in the area, making it an ideal base for a holiday.
There's a wide choice of accommodation in and around Newtonmore, from self catering cottages to guesthouses and hotels.
Activities in the area include pony-trekking, cycling, walking, golf, fishing and shooting. If you get a chance check out a shinty match on a Saturday - Newtonmore's shinty team are the current shinty champions of Scotland.

The Newtonmore Highland Games is held on the first Saturday of every August.

Travel Directions to Newtonmore

Newtonmore is at the very heart of the Scottish Highlands and is consequently easy to reach from all directions.  

The village lies a mile and a half off the A9, the main artery road to the North of Scotland,  14 miles south of Aviemore. It is an hour's journey from Inverness and Fort William,  two - three hours from Glasgow or Edinburgh,  and 2 hours from Aberdeen.  

Newtonmore is on the main railway line to the North.   The night sleeper to London stops here by arrangement and there are regular services through the day.  

Scottish Citylink Coach services from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Inverness also stop in Newtonmore every two hours through the day.

Local Sights & Activities for Newtonmore

One of the great fun activities for families with young children is the Wild Cat Experience - a fun 'treasure hunt' where you hunt for any of the 100 painted model wildcats which are hidden throughout the area.

  • Insh Marsh Reserve

    Very important wetland for nesting birds and home to Osprey's in the summer. If you are interested in nature and birds: a must. Lovely walks as well so ideal for the kids.

Nearby Distilleries

  • Dalwhinnie Distillery

    Located at over 1164 feet, Dalwhinnie Distillery is one of the highest distilleries in Scotland. It is open 7 days a week all year. The easiest distillery to visit if you are travelling north on the A9.
