A sister restaurant of the acclaimed St Andrew's eaterie The Doll's House, La Posada may be a world away in terms of cooking styles but the standard of food and service is just as high.
Divided into three separate rooms the restaurant prides itself on its authenticity and the walls and ceilings in each room are decorated with original Mexican pottery and crafts.
We found ourselves in La Posada room - the largest of the three - with a vibrant orange and blue colour scheme and an atmosphere of happy informality.
The other rooms include the Mezcal, the second largest, decorated in pink, pale blue and yellow and La Sol, a favourite with afternoon visitors as it captures the best of the pre-teatime sunshine.
While we considered the menu and the daily specials boards a bowl of tortilla chips accompanied by two Margueritas arrived at the table to whet our appetites.
Although the starters were tempting we were a little pushed for time and decided to go straight to the mains so the pork ribs in hot chilli sauce, white fish in lime juice and cheese-filled jalapeno peppers had to be left for another day.
The starters menu also includes black tailed prawns with avacado, pineapple and coriander and chilli vinaigrette, rolled beef or chicken tortillas on a mango salsa and a selection of nachos.
The mains menu is extensive and features grills, chilli, chimichanga, vegetarian dishes, fajitas and specials including the intriguing Mole Poblano which combines chargrilled chicken with chilli chocolate!
After considering the Baked Red Snapper Veracruz with olive, chilli and caper sauce I eventually opted for the Manchamanteles or sloppy chicken as it is also known. I wondered just how sloppy it was going to be when the waiter brought me a spoon and although it probably would have been impossible to eat with anything else, this chicken stew with red chillis, lime, almonds spices and pineapple, was delicious and came served with tortillas, Mexican rice and refried beans.
My partner had just about ordered the Albondigas, a La Posada favourite of pork meatballs with coriander and Monterey Jack cheese, when he spotted Lamb Birria on the specials board and opted for that instead.
The mouthful I stole from his plate was wonderfully spicy and tender. It too also came with Mexican rice and the ubiquitous refried beans. Main courses are around the 7 to 10 mark although steaks are more expensive. Special set price menus are also available for larger groups.
