The Twin City Cafe is a welcome addition to Dundee's rather lacklustre selection of coffee stops for weary shoppers - and it's not just the prime location that's ensuring it stays packed with both people and plastic bags.
Situated right in City Square, it has been serving highly welcome lattes and cappuccinos since it opened in the summer, along with surprisingly good fare.
Inside, the cafe is pleasant and spacious and, if you're a keen people-watcher and you get there during a quiet spell, you can sit next to the window which affords you a great view of everything going on nearby. Our latest visit coincided with the switching on of the city's Christmas lights, which we watched from our warm surroundings, sustained by bowls of Italian vegetable soup with crusty rolls and vanilla cappuccinos with rhubarb tarts to follow.
The menu ranges from reliable favourites like chicken and chips and pasta dishes to speciality sandwiches - the baguettes with mozzarella and sundried tomato are built for giants, while the falafel and hummous comes with "khoubz" - a flat bread like pitta, but thinner. In fact, there's a real Greek/Turkish influence to be found, with appropriate gooey sweetmeats nestling beside the usual croissants and cakes in the glass serving counter.
Service is extremely friendly, and even after a swift coffee staff will ask you "Was everything all right?"
The Twin City Cafe is more than all right by Dundonians and visitors alike. At any time of day, you know you're in for a treat as well as a rest.
