Art Galleries in Edinburgh

Aside from the main galleries mentioned in the 'Sights' section, Edinburgh has several smaller spaces where the work of up-and-coming contemporary artists can be viewed.

City Art Centre 2 Market St, Tel: 5293993 Houses 6 exhibition galleries. Home to the city's collection of Scottish art, with works by Peploe, McTaggart, Ferguson and Eardley as well as more contemporary artists such as Blackadder and Paolozzi, as well as being one of the leading temporary exhibition spaces in the UK. Also has a café. Open Mon-Sat 1000-1700, Sun during the Festival only 1400-1700. Usually free, but charges for selected shows.

Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop and Gallery 23 Union St, off Leith Walk, Tel: 5572479. Exhibits a huge range of contemporary etchings, lithographs and screenprints. You can buy prints in the shop at reasonable prices and see the workshops. Open Tue-Sat 1000-1800. Free.

The Fruitmarket Gallery 45 Market St, Tel: 2252383. Near Waverley station. One of the country's major venues for exhibitions of national and international contemporary art. Also has a good bookshop and café. Open Mon-Sat 1100-1800, Sun 1200-1700. Free. Stills Gallery, 23 Cockburn St, Tel: 622-6200. Scotland's leading photographic gallery, with a good café. Open Tue-Sat 1000-1700. Free.

Analogue 102 West Bow, Old Town, Tel: 2200601 It is a home of comtemporaray culture books and wide selection of magazines. Collective 22-28 Cockburn Street, Old Town, Tel: 2201260 This gallery has platform for diverse upcoming local talents and also international artists. Doggerfisher 11 Gayfield Sqaure, Broughton, Tel: 5587110 It has been an impressive roster of maily Scottish artists since its start. From Moyna Flanningan, Nathan Coley and Rosalind Nashashibi fairs and is an increasingly conspicious player at art fairs around the world. Ingleby Gallery 6 Carlton Terrace, Calton Hill, Tel: 556441 This Georgian townhouse is an ideal place to look for abstract art. It displays a wide collection of clutch of prints and paintings. Inverleith House Royal Botanic Garden, 20A Inverleith Row Stockbridge, Tel: 2482931 Inverleith House is moreover a house cum gallery and was also the home to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Buitl way back in 1774 this impressive house has been refurbished and has been transformed into an art house. Stills 23 Cockburns Street, Old Town, Tel: 6226203 Stills marks its place as one of the ideal venues for photography, with many shows and famous annual Jerwood Photography Award Exhibitions.
