Moncur

This name appears in very early charters, and it is suggested that it may derive from the French word ‘coeur’, meaning ‘heart’. Michael de Muncur, a soldier, witnessed a charter by Isabella Bruce, between 1237 and 1248. Andrew de Monctour appears on the Ragman Roll rendering homage for his lands to Edward I of England in 1296. Marriota de Moncur is listed by Black as being Lady de Rossy in 1302. Andrew Moncur of that Ilk gave a bond of manrent to the Earl of Errol in 1541. The Moncurs of that Ilk flourished around Perthshire, and their Castle of Moncur was in the parish of Inchture in the Carse of Gowrie. The Moncurs of Dundee had a high reputation as armourers in the sixteenth century. There are many references to armour made by them and they appear to have been armour makers to the royal court.
