Ideally located to explore Dumfries and Galloway and Scotland’s Border country - a land of peace and tranquillity, steeped in history, with imposing castles, abbeys, stately mansions and dramatic ruins. Picturesque towns and villages are set in a landscape of rolling hills, wild moorland and meandering rivers. Ramble the moors and hills, discover the coastline, fish the rivers and lochans, ride the bridleways, play the fairways or take a mountain bike challenge. Visit the museums, telling the unique story of the Borderland, and the workshops and galleries which produce traditional and contemporary designs in glass, textiles, pottery and precious metals. The cities of Edinburgh and Carlisle and cosmopolitan Glasgow are easily reached within an hour. Dumfries and Galloway boasts rugged coastlines and secluded beaches which benefit from the warmth of the passing Gulf Stream and is surrounded by breathtaking scenery, offering an ideal base from which to explore the Machars Peninsula and the Galloway Hills. There are many gardens to explore, including Logan Botanical Gardens, as well as the gardens at Alnwick Castle, Kailzie and Dawyck. There are also magnificent stately homes such as Abbotsford, Floors Castle, Mellerstain and Manderston.
