Fishers, 1 The Shore, Tel: 5545666. This is one of Edinburgh's finest fish restaurants, in an area packed full of them. It's housed in the tower at the end of The Shore. Open daily 1215-2230.
(fitz)henry, 19 Shore Pl, Tel: 5556625. This stylish warehouse brasserie is one of only two city eateries to receive a Michelin Red M (the other is The Atrium) for its genuinely original and excellent Scottish cooking. Open Mon-Thu 1230-1430, 1830-2230, Fri/Sat till 2230.
Restaurant Martin Wishart, 54 The Shore, Tel: 5533557. French-influenced cuisine at its finest from the renowned chef. Unfussy decor for a memorable meal. Open Tue-Fri 1200-1400, 1900-2200, Sat 1900-2200.
Skippers, 1a Dock Pl, Tel: 5541018. Many in the know would say this is the best place to eat seafood in town. This nautical bistro is small and intimate, and very popular, so you'll need to book. Open Mon-Sat 1230-1400, 1900-2200.
The Vintners Rooms, 87 Giles St, Tel: 5546767. These former wine vaults dating from the 17th century now house a restaurant and bar, both lit by candlelight and oozing historic charm and romance. The food is French provincial and excellent, as is the service. Meals in the bar at lunch-times are cheaper. Open Mon-Sat 1200-1400, 1900-2230.
Mid-range
Daruma-Ya, 82 Commercial St, Tel: 5547660. Japanese cuisine in elegant 19th-century surroundings and served by friendly, helpful staff. Sounds an unlikely combination but check it out for yourself. Set lunches and dinners are great value. Open Mon 1830-late, Tue-Sat 1200-1400, 1830-late.
Malmaison Brasserie, 1 Tower Pl, Tel: 468-5000. Attached to the acclaimed Malmaison Hotel (see 'Sleeping'). Excellent French brasserie food in stylish surroundings. Open Mon-Fri 0700-1000, 1200-1400, 1800-2230 (Sat from 0800, Sun till 2200).
The Shore, 3-4 The Shore, Tel: 5535080. One of the city's best fish restaurants with a real fire and huge windows overlooking the Water of Leith. No smoking. You can eat from the restaurant menu in the adjoining bar. Open Mon-Sat 1100-2400, Sun 1230-2300.
Tinelli, 139 Easter Rd, Tel: 6521932. This out of the way Italian is one of the city's best and well worth the effort of finding it. Genuine Italian cooking of the highest quality and fantastic value. It's small and gets busy so book ahead. Open Mon-Sat 1200-1430, 1830-2300.
Umberto's, 2 Bonnington Rd La (off Broughton Rd), Tel: 5541314. Very good Italian food with a Scottish flavour at one of the most child-friendly restaurants in town. In the evening, you can pig out and eat and drink as much as you can for £15. Open Mon-Sat 1200-1430, 1700-2200, Sun 1200-1800.
The Waterfront, 1c Dock Pl, Tel: 5547427. Great for fish or just for a relaxing drink. Seating in the conservatory or cosy booths. Open Mon-Thu 1200-2300, Fri/Sat till 2400, Sun 1230-2230.
