Kirkton, Cairngorms - Sleeps 6
Customer Reviews of Kirkton, Cairngorms - Sleeps 6
1st comment: A great holiday home, well equipped (maps and leaflets aplenty so finding something to do is fairly easy) and very cosy no matter what the weather was like. The logs burning in the open fire soon drove away grey and damp weather. Our 3 kids (10, 6 and 5 years) loved the location and the fact that they could go out and explore on their own in complete safety. If cooking at the home the kitchen is well equipped with knives that work (not always the case and always a good test on the quality of the owners.) We had great fun visiting Glenbuchat and Kildrummy castles. Visit Kildrummy first then if you buy the info book you will find it also covers Glenbuchat. It costs to visit Kildrummy but Glenbuchat is free and is a superb little gem. The Grampian Motor Museum is also good value with numerous vehicles that the kids, and yourselves, can climb and play on, a great wet weather venue with plenty for the kids. Don’t bother with the nearby railway which costs a lot to have a 15min journey of the local golf course. If you are feeling energetic the walk up the hill outside the front door is well worth the effort with its craggy top, ancient hollowed out well and great views of the area.(You can cheat, drive to the other side of the hill and then walk along well marked paths - but that means you have to get into the car and will miss out on a bit heather bashing!!) The nearby town of Alford (about 30mins drive)has a reasonable sized Co-Op, petrol station and a number of small shops/restaurants supplying everything that you will need for a comfortable stay. We had a meal at the bistro and although a bit pricey was a pleasant way to finish the last night The owners of the cottage are very helpful especially when confirming directions and have a great attitude to running a holiday home. All in all a fantastic cottage with plenty of space in and out. The kids are asking when can we go back. June 2012.
