It’s nice to know that in this day and age, when all the big name chefs cook up the latest foreign dishes in big-name city restaurants, you can still find good, healthy, filling food in the heart of the Scottish countryside.

The Falls of Lora Bistro, part of the hotel of the same name, offers a tasty range of local and national dishes from its extensive menu.

You can choose from 15 starters and 20 main courses, and whichever meal you plump for will not disappoint. Quite simply, it’s good old-fashioned traditional food, well done.

Situated in Connell Ferry, just five miles before Oban on the A85, the bistro, and adjoining hotel and bar, are perfectly placed for a good night out should you be on your way back to the central belt or staying in Argyll for a little longer.

Whatever your reasons for being in the area, it’s worth stopping here. The views, taking in the shores of Loch Etive and looking across to Benderloch on the north side, are breath-taking. A before or after dinner stroll, weather permitting, is as recommended as the meal itself.

I sampled the home-made macaroni with cheese. It may sound simple and unadventurous, but as any cook will know it’s easy to mess-up. This, however, was superb and was more than enough on its own to fill up the weary traveller.

There’s a good choice of fresh meat and fish dishes as well as good vegetarian options (I particularly recommend the veggie burgers), and a three-course meal with dessert and coffee will only set you back 12.

A different place to come and well worth the effort.
