Monteith

This name is quite commonly spelt ‘Monteath’, and was most prominent in Perthshire. The lands of Monteith were held by the family perhaps as early as the twelfth century. Malcolm de Maneteath appears as a witness to a charter of 1237. Kilinus de Mineteth was vicar of Kaledrach in the diocese of Dunblane in 1322. The name is found elsewhere in Scotland: William Mynteith and Patrick Mynteith were both burgesses of Glasgow at the beginning of the seventeenth century. The principal families were those of Kerse and of Duchally. Sir Ruthven Monteath of Duchally was chairman of the Bombay Chamber of Commerce in 1910 and a member of the viceroy’s council in India.
