Newlands

The earliest known chief of this territorial name is Jasper Newlands of that Ilk, who was involved in a protracted dispute (1469–81) with Lord Carlyle over water rights at New-lands and Duncow in Nithsdale, which ended only when Newlands was ordered by the sheriff to ‘desist from further vexation’. There was also a barony of Newlands in Kincardine and a parish in Peeblesshire. Distinguished family members include John Newlands, who created the Periodic Table of the Elements (1863). William Newlands of Lauriston, a writer, has restored Lauriston Castle in Kincardineshire, as a rallying point for the clan.
