Thornhill lies on the main A76 road from Dumfries to Kilmarnock as it follows Nithsdale north through the Southern Uplands. The focal point of the village is the Mercat Cross where the broad streets meet at a small roundabout.The mainstreet is lined with prosperous Victorian villas built in the local red sandstone. Drumlanrig Castle lies four miles north of Thornhill. There was a Douglas stronghold here in the 1300s. The present castle was built by William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry,in 1691 as one of Scotland's first renaissance buildings. The castle is surrounded by a 120,000 acre estate and is open to the public from May to late August. It remains home to the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry.The town of Dumfries is just 15 miles away.
