Lochmaben sits close the border with England, between Lockerbie & Dumfries, It was a strategically important location with an important Castle. A small town with long historical record owing to its position on the border and its natural assets of lochs and fertile soils. Today the town is bypassed by main roads and retains a local charm and sense of community.

The strategic importance of Lochmaben and its demise is inscribed in the history of the castle which remains impressive today even though ruined. The castle is well worth a visit (see below). The town's fortunes have varied over time including at one stage being the poorest Burgh in souther Scotland.

Lochmaben is a good place to stop on your way West into Dumfries and Galloway. The broad high street with its statue of Robert Bruce is the heart of the town. It is claimed that Lochmaben is the birth place of The Bruce, but it is not much supported by documents.

Eating Out

If you are stopping, there are a number of pubs in the town as well as Crolla's Cafe which is good if all you want is a light snack
